THE LETTER THAT SEALED A LEGACY

As Ahmed Seddiqi marks its 75th anniversary in 2025, we shine a light on the single document that unlocked a partnership still running strong seven decades later.

A Sealed Envelope from the Ruler’s Court

It was 1952 when a humble watch merchant in Bur Dubai received a letter that would change everything. One morning, Ahmed Seddiqi was handed a crisp envelope bearing the seal of Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai. Inside lay a personal recommendation vouching for Ahmed Seddiqi’s honesty and trustworthiness, an endorsement that would open Rolex’s vaults to the fledgling company.

Swiss Reluctance and a Bold Request

In the early 1950s, Swiss manufacturers saw the Gulf as too remote and risky. Rolex in particular maintained tight control over its distribution, wary of untested markets. Ahmed Seddiqi had already built solid word‑of‑mouth by selling a handful of watches each month from his wooden cabinet, but to secure an official agency, he needed more than local goodwill.

He approached Sheikh Rashid, explained his vision for bringing precision timepieces to Dubai, and asked for a formal letter to present in Geneva. Within days, the ruler obliged, transforming Ahmed Seddiqi’s request into an invitation Rolex could not ignore.

The Handwritten Recommendation

Sheikh Rashid’s brief letter carried extraordinary weight. Addressed to Rolex in Geneva, it began with the ruler’s formal title and went on to describe Seddiqi & Sons as “a trusted family‑run business” that would faithfully uphold Rolex’s standards.

First Rolex Arrivals and Early Triumphs

Later that year, the first crate of Rolex Oyster Perpetuals arrived in Bur Dubai. Word spread quickly through the souks and coastal towns. Locals who had watched Ahmed Seddiqi’s cabinet sales for years lined up to secure the new watches, instantly creating a waiting list for future arrivals.

These inaugural sales not only validated an exclusive Rolex franchise but also proved that the Gulf’s appetite for luxury was real. The trust established by that solitary letter became the foundation for uninterrupted Rolex retailing in Dubai and the northern Emirates ever since.

A Partnership That Endures

Fast forward to 2025 and the Seddiqi family is still writing new chapters with Rolex. In mid-2024, Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons inaugurated a dedicated Rolex Certified Pre-Owned salon at Wafi Mall, underscoring their unwavering partnership. The space showcases nearly three hundred pre-owned Rolex timepieces, each authenticated and serviced to Rolex’s exacting Swiss standards.

It is a fitting tribute to the vision laid out in that 1952 letter and proof that a single handwritten endorsement can spark a legacy that spans generations.
